I started out my love for all animals at a very early age. Having a multitude of pets from horses to a baby lamb when I was 5 years old. I would rescue baby birds that had fallen out of the nest and raise them up till they could be set free. I wanted with all my heart to become a vet but finances would not allow that. I was blessed with the opportunity to work at a veterinary hospital and thru years of training was grandfathered in as a Vet. Tech. I did this for 15 years at the same time I also worked as a propagation specialist for the major bird farms in southern California. I got to work with the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld on a couple of occasions. This was in the 70’s and 80’s when birds were being brought in by the thousands to the United States. I would show up for work and be greeted by 300 hyacinth macaws all of which were wild. Nothing like having a bird look at your hand as it is cracking a whole coconut. It hit me then that there must be a better way for people to get birds as pets. Not taking a wild bird that is used to its freedom and taming it down. So I started to raise birds at my home. When I was pregnant I could not longer work at the vet. hospital due to diseases that a unborn child can get when dealing with litter boxes and such. So I stopped working and put all my attention on raising my daughter still having some birds that I bred occasionally. We moved up to Washington state and I opened a grooming shop out of my home which took off. But the birds were still a goal for me to provide loving babies to people. Thus I started Whidbey Birds. My daughter now works side by side with me feeding the babies and playing with them and training them. It gives me such pleasure to get letters and calls from people from around the USA telling me how happy they are with their babies.
We pull all our babies at 10 days from the nest boxes. We find this to be the best age for them to start bonding with humans but still get that important nutrition and mothers love. Our birds are raised in our home with our other pets. So they are very used to day to day nosie and life… Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions….
